Meta Glasses and Accessibility: Could Smart Glasses Give Disabled People More Independence — or Create New Privacy Risks?

Smart glasses are becoming one of the most talked-about pieces of wearable technology.

At first glance, Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses may simply look like a pair of ordinary glasses with a camera and speakers built into them. But behind that familiar appearance is a much more powerful idea: wearable technology that can see, hear, respond to voice commands and provide information without the user having to constantly reach for a phone.

For many people, that might be convenient.

For someone who is blind or visually impaired, however, the potential is much bigger.

Smart glasses could help someone read information, identify objects, understand what is around them, communicate with another person, or obtain assistance without having to stop what they are doing and take out a phone.

That could mean greater independence, confidence and freedom.

But there is another side to the story.

The same camera that can describe a scene to a blind person can also record another person without their knowledge. The same technology that can make everyday life more accessible can potentially become a tool for surveillance, harassment or unwanted recording.

That leaves us with an important question:

How do we make technology more accessible without sacrificing everybody else’s right to privacy?

At AbillityU, we don’t think this is a question with a simple yes-or-no answer.

We think both sides deserve to be heard.

What are Meta’s smart glasses?

Meta’s smart glasses, including the Ray-Ban Meta range, combine traditional eyewear with cameras, microphones, speakers and Meta AI.

The glasses can respond to voice commands and, depending on the feature being used, can provide information about things the camera sees. Meta specifically promotes their potential to help blind and visually impaired people by describing surroundings, reading text and identifying objects.

The technology has also developed beyond simply asking an AI assistant a question.

Meta has worked with Be My Eyes to provide hands-free access to visual assistance for blind and low-vision users. The service can connect a user with a sighted volunteer who can help them understand something in front of them.

That is important because accessibility isn’t always about replacing human assistance with technology.

Sometimes the most useful technology is the technology that makes it easier for someone to get the right help when they need it.

Why could smart glasses be so important for blind and visually impaired people?

For someone who is blind or has significant sight loss, many ordinary activities can involve additional barriers.

Reading a sign.

Checking a label.

Identifying an object.

Finding something in an unfamiliar environment.

Working out what is on a menu.

Recognising a person.

Understanding what is happening around you.

These may be relatively simple tasks for a sighted person, but they can require additional technology, assistance from another person or careful preparation for someone with sight loss.

Smart glasses potentially bring some of those capabilities directly into the user’s field of experience.

Research and commentary around smart glasses have highlighted their potential to increase independence for people with visual impairments. Guide Dogs has also examined the technology and identified possible benefits for navigation, locating objects and completing everyday tasks.

That matters because independence isn’t necessarily about never needing another person.

Independence is about having more choice.

If someone can find out what is written on a sign without having to ask a stranger, that can give them more control.

If they can identify an item in a shop without asking another person, that can give them more confidence.

If they can contact a volunteer hands-free when they genuinely need assistance, that can mean they don’t have to plan their entire activity around whether another person will be available.

Those may seem like small things.

For the person experiencing them, they may not be small at all.

Smart glasses could reduce the need to ask for help

One of the most important benefits of accessible technology is sometimes overlooked.

It can reduce the number of situations in which a disabled person has to rely on someone else.

That doesn’t mean disabled people shouldn’t ask for help.

It means they should have the choice about when they need it.

Imagine standing in a supermarket and wanting to know which product you have picked up.

Instead of finding a member of staff or asking another shopper, you could potentially use your glasses to obtain information about the product.

Or imagine receiving a letter.

Instead of finding someone to read it, technology could potentially help you access the text yourself.

Or imagine being somewhere unfamiliar.

A combination of smart glasses, a smartphone and appropriate accessibility software could potentially provide information that helps you understand your surroundings.

These aren’t replacements for mobility training, guide dogs, human assistance or other forms of support.

They are additional tools.

And that distinction is important.

The human connection still matters

There is a danger in talking about AI accessibility as though technology will solve every problem associated with disability.

It won’t.

AI can make mistakes.

Cameras don’t understand everything they see.

Software can misunderstand context.

Internet connectivity can fail.

Battery life can become a problem.

And technology can never replace the value of another human being in every situation.

This is one reason the partnership between Meta and Be My Eyes is particularly interesting.

Rather than assuming artificial intelligence can always provide the answer, the technology can also provide a route to human assistance. Be My Eyes describes its Meta glasses integration as providing hands-free access to volunteers for blind and low-vision users.

That combination of AI plus human support may ultimately be more useful than either one on its own.

But there is a serious problem: privacy

Now we need to look at the other side.

A camera on a smartphone is obvious.

Someone holding a phone up to record you is generally easy to recognise.

Smart glasses are different.

They can look almost identical to ordinary glasses.

That creates a very different privacy problem.

Someone could potentially be standing next to you wearing camera-enabled glasses without you immediately knowing whether they are recording.

And that is where legitimate concerns begin.

Recent reports in the UK have highlighted restrictions on camera-equipped smart glasses. UK cinema operators have introduced policies restricting their use because of concerns about recording and film piracy, while UK courts have also banned Meta smart glasses from courtrooms because of concerns around unauthorised photography and filming.

These aren’t concerns we should simply dismiss.

People have a reasonable expectation that they shouldn’t be secretly recorded whenever they go about their everyday lives.

What about consent?

Consent becomes particularly complicated with wearable cameras.

Imagine sitting in a café having a private conversation.

Someone at the next table is wearing smart glasses.

Are they recording?

Are they taking photographs?

Are they using an AI system to analyse what they can see?

You might not know.

And even if the glasses have a recording light, how noticeable is it from several metres away?

This is one of the biggest challenges facing the technology.

The person wearing the glasses may have completely legitimate reasons for using them.

But the person being recorded may have completely legitimate reasons for not wanting to be recorded.

Both people matter.

The accessibility argument cannot simply override privacy

This is where the debate can become polarised.

One side might say:

“These glasses can transform the lives of blind people, so we shouldn’t restrict them.”

The other might say:

“They contain cameras, so they should be banned.”

Neither position completely solves the problem.

A technology can be enormously valuable to disabled people while still requiring appropriate safeguards.

We don’t normally say that because a technology is useful to disabled people, it should automatically be exempt from rules that protect other people.

At the same time, we shouldn’t create restrictions that unintentionally remove valuable accessibility tools from the people who benefit from them.

The answer needs to be more sophisticated than that.

Could smart glasses be restricted to blind and visually impaired people?

This is an interesting idea.

One possible approach would be to say that camera-enabled AI glasses should only be available to people who need them for accessibility purposes.

The argument would be relatively simple:

If the glasses are particularly valuable as assistive technology for blind and visually impaired people, why should everybody else be allowed to use them?

It could potentially reduce the number of people using the technology simply to record others discreetly.

It could also create a distinction between assistive use and general consumer use.

But there are significant problems with this approach.

Who decides who is disabled enough?

Would someone need to prove that they are registered blind?

What about someone who is partially sighted?

What about someone with fluctuating vision?

What about someone who has another disability that could benefit from camera-based AI?

What about someone with a condition that isn’t immediately obvious?

And who would hold that information?

A system requiring people to prove their disability before being allowed to buy technology could create another accessibility barrier.

Disabled people already face enough situations where they have to prove that they are disabled.

We should be extremely careful about creating another one.

Disability isn’t the only reason someone might legitimately need the technology

There may also be people who are not blind or visually impaired who could benefit from smart glasses.

Someone with certain physical disabilities might find hands-free technology useful.

Someone with communication difficulties might benefit from particular AI features.

Someone with another accessibility need could potentially use wearable technology in ways that weren’t originally anticipated by the manufacturer.

Accessibility should not become a narrow category where only one group is allowed access.

Technology often develops in unexpected ways.

A better solution could be accessibility-specific safeguards

Instead of saying:

“Only disabled people can have smart glasses.”

Perhaps we should be asking:

“How can smart glasses be made safer for everyone while protecting accessibility for people who genuinely depend on them?”

There are several possibilities.

1. Stronger recording indicators

If someone is recording, the indication should be genuinely visible.

Not hidden.

Not something that can easily be ignored.

And not something that can simply be disabled without the user knowing that doing so undermines the privacy protection.

The person being recorded should have a reasonable opportunity to understand what is happening.

2. Better privacy modes

Smart glasses could potentially have different modes for different environments.

For example:

Public mode: normal functionality.

Privacy-sensitive mode: recording restricted.

Venue mode: cameras disabled.

Accessibility mode: essential accessibility functions remain available while non-essential recording functions are restricted.

That would be much more flexible than simply banning the entire technology.

3. Venue restrictions

There are already places where camera-enabled devices may not be appropriate.

Courts.

Some workplaces.

Certain medical environments.

Examination rooms.

Secure facilities.

Private meetings.

Cinemas.

The answer may therefore be to restrict smart glasses in particular environments rather than banning them everywhere.

Recent UK restrictions demonstrate that this approach is already being considered in practice.

4. Accessibility exemptions

If a venue restricts camera-enabled glasses, there should be a serious conversation about accessibility.

Imagine a blind person entering a location where their glasses provide essential assistance.

A blanket “no smart glasses” rule could unintentionally create a barrier.

Instead, venues could consider an accessibility process.

The goal should not be:

“Disabled people get to ignore privacy rules.”

It should be:

“Disabled people should still have access to necessary assistance while the privacy of other people is protected.”

That is a much more balanced principle.

What about facial recognition?

This is another area where we need to be extremely careful.

A camera identifying an object or reading a sign is one thing.

Identifying a person is something else.

Facial recognition raises significant questions about consent, data protection and surveillance.

People shouldn’t automatically become identifiable simply because someone nearby is wearing AI-enabled glasses.

This is an area where strong restrictions may be justified.

A person using glasses to read a menu or identify a product does not necessarily need a system that identifies every person around them.

Accessibility does not require unlimited surveillance.

That distinction should be part of the design of future products.

What happens to the information captured by the glasses?

Another important question is data.

If the glasses capture an image and AI processes it, where does that information go?

Is it stored?

For how long?

Who can access it?

Is it used to improve the AI?

Can the user delete it?

Could another company obtain it?

These questions matter because accessibility technology can involve very personal information.

A blind person might use their glasses in their home, workplace, doctor’s office, school or social environment.

The fact that the person using the technology has a legitimate accessibility need doesn’t mean the people around them have surrendered their privacy.

Technology companies therefore need to be transparent about what happens to data.

Users need meaningful controls.

And the rules need to keep pace with the technology.

Smart glasses shouldn’t replace proper accessibility

There is another issue that deserves attention.

Technology should not become an excuse for organisations to stop making their services accessible.

Imagine a business saying:

“You don’t need accessible signage. You can just use AI glasses.”

That’s backwards.

Accessibility should be built into the environment.

Clear signage.

Accessible websites.

Readable information.

Audio information where appropriate.

Accessible public transport.

Reasonable adjustments.

Inclusive customer service.

Assistive technology should complement accessibility — not replace an organisation’s responsibility to provide it.

Could smart glasses actually make society more inclusive?

Yes.

And this is perhaps the most exciting part.

The technology could eventually benefit disabled and non-disabled people in different ways.

A blind person might use glasses to understand visual information.

A person with hearing loss might benefit from visual or text-based information.

Someone with mobility difficulties might use hands-free technology.

A person with learning difficulties might use AI to simplify information.

A worker might use wearable technology to access instructions without constantly looking at a screen.

This is why completely dismissing smart glasses would be a mistake.

The technology has genuine potential.

Meta itself highlights accessibility applications for blind and visually impaired people, including describing surroundings, reading text and identifying objects.

The question is not whether the technology can be useful.

It clearly can.

The question is how we make it useful without creating unacceptable risks.

What should happen next?

We believe the conversation needs to move away from two extremes.

It shouldn’t be:

“Smart glasses are amazing and anyone worried about them is overreacting.”

And it shouldn’t be:

“Smart glasses have cameras, so ban them.”

The reality is more complicated.

For some blind and visually impaired people, this technology may provide another layer of independence that was previously difficult or impossible to achieve.

For other people, the same technology may create legitimate concerns about being recorded or observed without their knowledge.

Both experiences can be true at the same time.

Our view: protect accessibility without ignoring privacy

At AbillityU, we believe disabled people should have access to technology that can improve independence.

If a pair of smart glasses helps someone read information, identify an object, contact a volunteer or understand their surroundings, that can be genuinely empowering.

But we also believe disabled people’s needs should not be used as an excuse to ignore the privacy rights of everyone else.

Rather than restricting smart glasses exclusively to blind and visually impaired people, we think a better approach would be to develop strong accessibility protections alongside strong privacy protections.

That could include:

  • Highly visible recording indicators
  • Clear consent expectations
  • Strong restrictions on facial recognition
  • Privacy modes for sensitive environments
  • Venue-specific restrictions
  • Better controls over data
  • Accessibility exemptions where appropriate
  • Clear rules for workplaces, healthcare, education and public spaces
  • Technology designed with disabled people from the beginning

And perhaps most importantly, disabled people should be involved in deciding what those rules look like.

After all, they are among the people most likely to benefit from the technology — and therefore among the people most affected if poorly designed rules make it inaccessible.

The future shouldn’t be accessibility versus privacy

That is perhaps the biggest lesson from the debate around Meta’s smart glasses.

We shouldn’t have to choose between independence and privacy.

We should be demanding technology that provides both.

For a blind or visually impaired person, being able to obtain information independently can be life-changing.

Being able to walk into a shop, understand a label, identify an object or get assistance without having to rely on another person every time can provide something that is difficult to put a price on:

choice.

But the person standing beside them also deserves privacy.

They deserve to know when technology is being used to record them.

They deserve protection from unwanted surveillance.

And they deserve to be able to go about their lives without assuming that every pair of ordinary-looking glasses might be recording them.

The challenge for technology companies, governments, businesses and society is therefore not to decide which group matters more.

It is to design a future where both groups matter.
