Practical Disability at Work
Real-World Skills for Working Inclusively with Disabled People
Disability inclusion isn’t just about policies, ramps or accessible toilets. It’s about whether disabled people can actually participate in everyday working life.
Practical Disability at Work is a practical, scenario-based course designed to help employees, managers and organisations recognise barriers, challenge assumptions and take appropriate action.
Rather than simply learning definitions and memorising information, you’ll work through realistic workplace situations and consider what is happening, what might be creating a barrier, what assumptions could be made, and what should happen next.
The course follows a simple approach:
SEE → THINK → ACT → CHECK
You’ll explore accessibility across the whole workplace experience — from entrances, corridors and facilities to meetings, training, technology, communication, recruitment, workplace events and reasonable adjustments.
You’ll also learn why something being accessible on paper doesn’t necessarily mean it is accessible in practice.
Throughout the course, you’ll consider questions such as:
What is the barrier?
What assumptions might someone make?
What could happen if nobody acts?
What would you do?
Who needs to be involved?
Does the solution actually work?
What happens if circumstances change?
The aim isn’t to make you an expert in every disability.
It’s to help you become better at recognising barriers and responding appropriately.
What you’ll learn
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
Recognise physical, digital and environmental barriers in the workplace.
Understand that accessibility is about more than what exists — it must also be available, usable and appropriate.
Challenge assumptions about disability, ability and appearance.
Understand that people’s needs can change over time.
Communicate with disabled colleagues respectfully and appropriately.
Understand the practical purpose of reasonable adjustments.
Recognise that inclusion applies across the entire employment journey.
Identify situations where specialist support or appropriate workplace processes may be needed.
Take appropriate action when accessibility arrangements or facilities stop working.
Think proactively about barriers before they become problems.
Apply the SEE → THINK → ACT → CHECK approach to real workplace situations.

A practical approach to inclusion
You won’t simply be told what the “right answer” is.
You’ll be encouraged to think about the situation, identify the barrier and decide what should happen next.
Because real-world inclusion isn’t always about knowing the perfect answer.
Sometimes it’s about knowing what question to ask next.
The goal
A workplace can have accessibility policies, an accessible entrance, an accessible toilet, a lift, accessible parking and assistive technology — and still create barriers.
This course is about looking beyond the checklist.
It’s about asking:
Can people actually participate?
Can they actually use what is available?
Does the solution actually work?
And when something doesn’t work:
What happens next?
By the end of the course, you’ll have a practical framework you can take back into your own workplace and use in everyday situations.
SEE IT.
THINK ABOUT IT.
ACT ON IT.
CHECK IT.
Make inclusion part of everyday practice.
Make inclusion normal.
